Welcome to our forum section of yourWARELOCAL.com
My wife Deb & I are not health nuts, we’re not super fit & slim, far from it. We are however very concerned about our family health and endeavor to eat as healthily as we can afford. We say afford, because unfortunately, if you’re honest, we’re not encouraged to eat healthily are we, we have fast food thrust upon us whichever way we look, & we all know how unhealthy it is, but can we afford not to eat more healthily.
The purpose of our Local Produce Forum website
It’s quite simple, my wife has done the research & I feel that I would rather know about this than not, so here it is, I’m sharing it with you if interested, but please remember – it’s our findings & opinion – your choice to accept it or not.
We want to encourage eating our local fresh fruit & vegetables for a healthier life & community
There’s a large percentage of our community that grow their own produce, which is great.
PROBLEM: Is that there’s often waste because there is only so much corn, collard greens or okra you can eat at one time!
SOLUTION: With our FREE website, people that want to eat healthier or harvest more than they can eat, can either sell it or trade it with other members in our community.
Most store bought fruit & vegetables
How many miles does your food travel?
- Lettuce: 2,055 miles
- Peaches: 1,674 miles
- Apples: 1,555 miles
- Grapes: 2,143 miles
- An average of 1,500 miles to get from the farm to you
How can anyone count this as fresh produce!
In order to transport food long distances, much of it is harvested & picked while still unripe and then gassed to “ripen” it after transport.
If that’s not bad enough it can also be processed in factories using preservatives, irradiation, and other means to keep it stable for transport and sale.
Scientists are experimenting with genetic modification to produce longer-lasting, less perishable produce.
